HOW TO - Blow stuff up

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Hack n Mod has a round-up of deadly Don't Try This At Home projects, such as building a flame thrower, smoke bombs, fireballs, mini (Hollywood) mushroom explosions, and more. I don't know anything about pyro, so I'm not endorsing any of this, just thought readers might find it interesting. Personally, seeing a teenage wielding a homemade PVC flamethrower scares the bejezuz out of me.

10 Excellent Examples of Parkour in Film and Television: Urban Acrobatics and Mainstream Media

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Guest article from the esteemed editors of Cineleet

Practically since the inception of parkour in 1997, it has been used in cinema to aid in great storytelling. There are twenty basic moves in parkour, and while in homemade parkour videos we don’t often see them performed in combos of two or greater (out of sheer complexity!), through the magic of editing, an entire sequence of moves can be cut together to look like one non-stop stunt sequence, often to breathtaking effect. Parkour founder David Belle has said the philosophy behind parkour is “You want to move in such a way…as to help you gain the most ground on…something, whether escaping from it or chasing toward it.” and this philosophy lends itself perfectly to the narrative structure of a great action film or commercial. Here are some of the best parkour moments in films and commercials.

One of the first to leverage the spectacle of parkour in cinema was founder David Belle himself. In 1997 Belle created a group of traceurs (parkour practitioners), free-runners, and street acrobats called Yamakasi. Inspired by this group, Luc Besson scripted a heist film by the same name in which the Yamakasi clan rob from the rich to pay for a heart implant for a young boy injured while imitating their stunts. Here’s a couple of thrilling sequences where they’re being chased by Doberman Pinschers and over the rooftops (a popular parkour theme) by cops.

Yamakasi:

The success of Yamakasi led, understandably, to a sequel, Les Fils du Vent, in which the Yamakasi crew travel to Bangkok, Thailand to fight the Yakuza. In the opening credits, Yamakasi play a (highly competitive) game of capture-the-weathervane ball across the rooftops of the city. Check out some of the Capoeira-style soccer kicks. We’ll see more of that later in this post.

Les Fils Du Vent titles:

Perhaps the best known example of parkour in film is from Banlieue 13 (District B13), a Luc Besson-produced action flick about a government conspiracy to nuke the most gang-infested ghetto in Paris. In the film’s riviting opening, David Belle narrowly escapes the persistent and agile thugs sent to get him. Watch how fluidly he slips from one floor to the next!

Banlieue 13:

One of David Belle’s fellow traceurs in the group Yamakasi was Sébastien Foucan. He’s also one of the founders of free running, a discipline similar to parkour, but with the focus being more on the movement aesthetics (although they are sometimes considered interchangeable). In the opening of Casino Royale, Foucan’s character, Mollaka gives James Bond a chase that would be an acrophobic’s worst nightmare up an unfinished construction site in the Bahamas.

Casino Royale:

Most people probably wouldn’t expect to see parkour in a film by the late Anthony Minghella, director of The English Patient and Cold Mountain. In 2006’s Breaking and Entering, Rafi Gavron plays Miro, a traceur hired to break into architectural firms. Here’s a compilation of scenes of some of the impressive stunt work from this film.

Breaking and Entering:

As soon as advertisers realized they could make a buck or two by exploiting the panache of parkour they wasted no time doing so. To its credit however, Nike went one step further in its “Presto” campaign by approaching parkour with a much-needed humorous tone, proving it didn’t have to be pigeon-holed into the action genre.

Here’s David Belle (again), going above and beyond the call of chivalry for a very fickle lover, who’s got a little surprise for him.

Nike “First Love” commercial:

Now it’s Sébastien Foucan’s turn in the spotlight, fleeing for his life through city streets and rooftops, from the angriest chicken ever.

Nike “Angry Chicken” commercial:

The traceur featured below is Chase Armitage, a key member of a crew called 3Run. Chase has been engaging in parkour and freerunning since he was 14, and it shows in this XBox spot. It’s amazing how the high-speed photography demonstrates how fluid and graceful moves which normally occur within a fraction of a second can truly be. The spoken text also elegantly captures the spirit behind freerunning.

Xbox “Slip” commercial:

And once again, here’s the incomparable David Belle, a little older, yet still in phenomenally good shape, performing some pretty nifty acrobatics in this BBC One commercial. Ever the iconoclast, Belle improvises his own way to beat the rush hour traffic home to watch some telly.

BBC “Rush Hour” commercial:

Finally, not technically parkour, here’s a commercial featuring a particular type of street acrobatics known as Capoeira. Capoeira originated in Brazil and is distinguished by its fluid kicks, sweeps, and headbutts. While some of the ball-passing has probably been executed in CGI, the acrobatics themeselves are nevertheless impressive to watch.

Fifa 3 commercial:

Japanese wind chimes

Monday, June 30th, 2008

PingMag has an interview with Yoshiharu Shinohara, a Japanese "furin" (glass wind chimes) maker.

Lastly, please tell me what it takes to be a craftsman in this day and age.

Lately, parents of young people will come up to me, and say "My child is really quiet and withdrawn, and just likes to stay in the house all the time, so I want him to become a craftsman." But this is what I tell them: "Lady, you've got it all wrong. It's tough to be a craftsman these days. You've got to find your own way to market your product, explain it by yourself, and add value to the product so it will sell for a good price. If you're quiet and withdrawn, you'd better forget about being a craftsman." But you know, if you're good at it, you can use your hands and your mind and make much more money than your average white collar worker. (laughs) If you want to succeed as a craftsman, you've got to be passionate about your work, passionate about your wife, and passionate about your land. Look at my family. We all get along. My son's going to take over the business, and even my granddaughters says they want to make wind chimes. Even though they both went to a good university. (laughs)

Twilight @ The Zune space - interactive illuminated chandelier

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Img 6354
Img 6341
Img 6126
Waldemeyer is one of my favorite makers on the planet, he's latest work is an interactive illuminated chandelier for Microsoft's Zune space in LA.

Waldemeyer’s latest project, Twilight, will be exhibited in the entrance of the new Zune space in Los Angeles, from May 2008. Commissioned by Microsoft’s entertainment brand Zune, the interactive chandelier illuminates the exclusive Zune-to-Zune sharing function that sets Zune apart from the rest by enabling users to share their music with the chandelier itself.

The room has been specifically designed as a haven for Zune users to make full use of Zune's social functions that allows spontaneous sharing of full-length sample tracks, playlists or pictures with other Zune users. The Twilight chandelier brings this function to an exciting new level: the Zune users in the room can send a song to the chandelier and watch as thousands of integrated lights react to the music, sending waves of light up and down the internal space in time to the beat. The installation is constructed of 15 sheets of organza fabric suspended from the ceiling to form a 3m by 3m cube. LED’s have been stitched into the fabric, creating illuminated silhouettes within each square to comprise an internal shape that evokes a conventional lamp-stand or natural tulip-esque form. The striking layering is best appreciated at daylight, when the fabric’s ephemeral qualities are exploited. As the eye moves up the chandelier, the lights appear to dissolve into mist as another layer of fabric masks each LED silhouette. The effect is of gazing into a fog, bringing a hint of Dickensian London to the blue skies of LA. At night, the installation transforms into a dazzling lightshow, with subtle interplay between LED and fabric as the light traces its weave.

Home Lands - Land Marks: Contemporary Art from South Africa

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Haunch of Venison London is running until July 5 Home Lands, Land Marks, an exhibition presenting works from seven contemporary artists from South Africa. Although i have less opportunity to see (and thus report on) shows of contemporary art from South Africa, what i've discovered of their practice over the past couple of years makes me think that we need to see more of their works. Here's a few reasons to explain why: Anton Kannemeyer - The Alphabet of Democracy, Control of Arrivals, In South African prisons.

0alalalmaisonnn.jpg
David Goldblatt, Incomplete houses, part of a stalled municipal development of 1000 houses. Lady Grey, Eastern Cape, 5 August 2006

The Haunch of Venison show didn't disappoint at all. Differing from the usual approach to post-apartheid South Africa, the exhibition addresses the complexity of the South African landscape, reflecting upon notions of memory, place and identity, referring to the political context and historical background of South Africa only through the imprint and trace of human experience on the physical landscape.

I couldn't resist focusing on the photographies of David Goldblatt who has spent the past five decades documenting everyday life in South Africa, from scenes of Apartheid to the advances of AIDS in the country (around one in seven of its citizens is infected with HIV), from scandalous housing development projects to memorial isolated by the side of the road.

The gallery website has plenty of pictures and that never prevents me from making my usual lame pics.
